Sakshi Malik creates history, wins bronze medal in women's freestyle 58 kg wrestling at Rio Olympics. Sakshi Malik from the northern state of Haryana became the first Indian woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal, as she clinched the bronze in the women's freestyle 58 kg category early on Thursday IST in Rio de Janeiro.
In a dramatic finish to her 58kg bronze medal match, Sakshi Malik put two points on the board just as time expired to win India's first medal in women's wrestling. Sakshi Malik beat Mongolia’s Orkhon Purevdorj, and then Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova.
With her bronze Olympic medal, and her silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Malik has now firmly established herself as one of India’s wrestling greats, just as good as, if not better than, the boys.
