Physicist Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76 on March 14, 2018.

He died peacefully at his home in Cambridge in the early hours of Wednesday, his family said. At the age of 22 Hawking was given only a few years to live after being diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease. The illness left him in a wheelchair and largely unable to speak except through a voice synthesiser. The disease reduced his bodily control to the flexing of a finger and voluntary eye movements but left his mental faculties untouched. He went on to become his generation’s leader in exploring gravity and the properties of black holes, the bottomless gravitational pits so deep and dense that not even light can escape them.
